A few weeks ago Spa Week posted this video on You Tube to promote their upcoming promotion for , well, Spa Week. Spa Week is a one week promotion to offer affordable $50 spa services at spas nationwide.
The video is a campy look at spa ettiqutte and tries to answer the questions of “What do I wear during my treatments?” “Do I tip a professional massage therapist? and “What goes on at a spa anyway?” The clever songwriting and comic approach to the subject matter has been commented on by spagoers and spa professionals in completely different ways. Some industry professionals on Linked In found the video “disgusting and greatly diminishes the real value of spa-ing and spa professionals.” Comments on You Tube ran more to ” If you think this video is inappropriate you a) have no sense of humor and b) probably are embarrassed about how awful you look naked. so please, “shut up in a nice way” as this video was meant to promote spa week and should not be taken so seriously.”
As a spa owner, I watched the video ready to jump on the “This is disgusting and an insult to our industry” bandwagon. But as I watched it, I found myself snickering, laughing and wanting to high five the guy when it finished. I though it was hilarious. Because I do massage and facials in our spa, as well as own and manage it, I am always trying to find creative ways to help make our customers feel comfortable at the spa. We are working on a “Frequently asked questions” page for the website, teach our receptionists to give plenty of information to first time visitors and write stories and blogs to help inform our customers.
The videos cheeky (no pun intended!) approach was a funny way to give info to the customers and to promote an event. Sure, some of the video could have been done differently, but honestly, people won’t think that spa customers are dancing naked in the steam room or playing guitar at the pedicure station after watching this video. It’s simply a marketing tool. A clever and funny one at that. It definitely got people talking about Spa Week. Isn’t that the purpose of marketing? What’s your opinion? Is this video Fact or Crap???
I like it, I think it explains a lot especially if you have never been to a spa.
Denise, I think this was hilarious. And it does help for the newcomers going to the spa.
